The UK has a serious waste problem. We produce 15 million tonnes of non-recyclable rubbish yearly, which spreads across our 1,600 landfill sites. They are a health risk that leach contaminates into drinking water, produce large amounts of methane gas x20 more warming than CO2, and release harmful gases that pollute our air. These are just a few impacts on human health and do not detail environmental concerns or other social issues.
There are some preventative policies to limit these harmful health risks, but with more waste produced than ever, these issues will continue to worsen. Wouldn’t it be great if we could eradicate waste and not harm the environment?
Energy from waste could be the start of waste management and to produce cleaner fuels. The UK are diverting materials from landfill, processing them to create steam to generate electricity. One plant would remove 169,000 tonnes of waste and produce 18MW of renewable energy. Gaining the potential to power 18,000 homes with electricity. Sustainable fuel technology is newly developed and has the prospects for a cleaner and greener world.
