Greener Solutions for a Cleaner World

June 2024

Dutch system turns traditionally non-recyclable waste into electricity production.

The Future of Waste

The UK has a serious waste problem. We produce 15 million tonnes of non-recyclable rubbish yearly, which spreads across our 1,600 landfill sites. They are a health risk that leach contaminates into drinking water, produce large amounts of methane gas x20 more warming than CO2, and release harmful gases that pollute our air. These are just a few impacts on human health and do not detail environmental concerns or other social issues.

There are some preventative policies to limit these harmful health risks, but with more waste produced than ever, these issues will continue to worsen. Wouldn’t it be great if we could eradicate waste and not harm the environment?

Energy from waste could be the start of waste management and to produce cleaner fuels. The UK are diverting materials from landfill, processing them to create steam to generate electricity. One plant would remove 169,000 tonnes of waste and produce 18MW of renewable energy. Gaining the potential to power 18,000 homes with electricity. Sustainable fuel technology is newly developed and has the prospects for a cleaner and greener world.

Northern Devon Green Innovation Projects

We are starting to see an influx of green investments and projects coming into Northern Devon. Find out more about these projects below.

Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre– Gained £15.5M of funding.

CelticFLOW– Going through planning application and gaining additional investment.

Archipelago– An innovative seaweed farm in operation.

Mitchell and Webber– Southwest oil alternative company (HVO) that releases 80% less emissions.

The benefits of these projects happening on our doorstep is that it is going to boost our economy and play a critical role in carbon reduction innovation for the rest of the UK and internationally.
